I’m a bit of a late starter when it comes to pottery… it’s a hobby that I’ve started delving in over the last few years. I’ve always been creative though, as a teenager I was creating designer knitwear and selling it in boutiques for hundreds of dollars each (and this was in the 80’s).
I love being creative, which is why I started on my pottery journey. Pottery is really relaxing, I love the texture and working with my hands. It’s peaceful and therapeutic, but at the same time creative… all the cool stuff rolled into one!
My pottery is entirely hand made – for my plates, I roll them by hand, shape them by hand and paint them by hand. Each one is totally unique. Occasionally I will do some wheel-throwing but the pottery I sell is usually hand rolled and of the souvenir style.
Why do I concentrate on souvenir pottery? Well, I love to travel, and when I travel I love to pick up a momento which is useful. Yes, I have a few tea towels, but they sit in a drawer, and doing dishes is boring! I wanted to create something that people would see in a store and immediately fall in love with, something that turns up on their coffee table covered in cheese & crackers! Something to remind them of the wonderful holiday they had on the Sunshine Coast, just like the drawer full of little plates and dishes that I have from my travels.
