Nicola Fleming
Made entirely by hand, the clay was rolled and shaped so that each plate is totally unique. After drying for about a week, the plate is then bisque fired at over 1000 degrees for around 8 hours. The next stage is the hand painting, for this souvenir plate the waves of the Sunshine Coast were painted. Once that’s dry, the plate is top coated with the shiny glaze which seals it and makes it safe to eat off. The final firing is done for another 8 hours at over 1000 degrees, and taaa daaaa! The finished product emerges. It’s always a surprise as some of the glazes that I use change colour during firing!
